New coal capacity under development in China increased by 38% in 2022, with 366 GW of new coal generation capacity planned. While China’s planned coal capacity climbed, the rest of the world saw its coal capacity decrease by 20% to 172 GW. While China is bringing on significantly more coal capacity than any other country, there are increases across other countries such as India, Turkey, and Indonesia.
